A Photo Tour of Amsterdam 006 – "De Oudekerk" – AD1250 – The OudeKerk (the Old Church) saw its beginnings as a Roman Catholic church named the "Sint Nicolaaskerk" in AD1250. When, on or about 1400, a second church was built (on a site on the dam, right next to where the Royal Palace would arise in 1655) it would soon acquire the popular name of "de Nieuwe Kerk" (the New Church) despite the fact that it was consecrated the "Church of Our Lady", it soon acquired the name of the "Nieuwekerk" (the New Church). After having survived the devasting, city-wide fires of 1421 and 1452, it was closed in 1951. At the completion of extensive repairs involving its foundations and other complex restorations, it was finally re-opened in 1994.
